Continuing from last month’s discussion, where we mentioned that food additives can burden your health, it is evident that more and more consumers are concerned about this issue. Recently, there has been a growing demand and expectation for health food and organic product shops. This naturally makes one curious—what exactly is organic food?
In brief, compared to conventional farming methods, which often use chemical fertilizers, synthetic inputs, and pesticides, and have short soil restoration periods, organic farming practices are more soil-friendly. These practices include using natural fertilizers, crop rotation, cover crops, or natural predators (beneficial insects). As a result, organic products are considered to have relatively higher nutritional value, fewer antibiotics, and lower pesticide residues.

Furthermore, did you know that organic products are also beneficial to the natural environment? First, chemical fertilizers may cause soil to produce nitrous oxide, a harmful gas that is more damaging to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. In contrast, natural fertilizers can store carbon in the soil, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere. Additionally, the absence of synthetic inputs and pesticides helps prevent nearby water sources from being polluted and maintains the ecological diversity of farmland.

Fortunately, there is an organic product shop that I love near my home: Organic Acres. I often shop there for fresh fruits and vegetables, which are always neatly arranged and accompanied by handwritten signs from the staff. Since most of the store’s products are supplied by local farms and ranches, they are almost always delivered fresh to the store daily—100% fresh! It feels like a true farm-to-table experience; I always imagine receiving the carefully grown organic products directly from the hands of farmers. To sum up, I believe in the concept of organic farming, support local organic products, and truly enjoy organic foods. How about you?
